Law Syllabus

Purpose:  This class is designed to offer the student with the opportunity to understand t= he components of the criminal and civil justice system. The method of which th= is course will be taught will be through reading, writing, videos, and, overal= l, discussion. Students are expected to complete all required readings and assignments on the day that they are due. Through the use of all of these methods, the student will have a better chance at comprehending the American legal system and the rights and responsibilities of the American citizen. <= /p>

 

Overview of Units:

Unit One: Fundamentals of the American Legal System

Unit Two: Criminal Law & Juvenile Justice

Unit Three: Torts

Unit Four: Family Law

Unit Five: Individual Rights & Liberties

 

 Required Materials: You need the following items with you in class every day:

1. Law Textbook

2. Law Binder w/ a spiral notebook for notes

3. A pen or pencil

4. Your planner (especially if you want to use the bathroom!)

 

Classroom Rules:

1. Be in your seat and ready for class when the bell r= ings.

2. Raise your hand if you want to be heard in this cla= ss.

3. Do not talk while others are talking.

4. Remain seated unless otherwise stated.

5. Leave food, drinks, coats and electronics in your l= ocker.

6. Respect yourself, your classroom, and your teacher.=

7. Follow the four P’s: Prompt, Prepared, Positi= ve, and Productive.

8. All school rules apply.

 

Classroom Procedures:

1. Tardy Policy: Be in your seat when the bell rings a= nd you will not be tardy. School tardy po= licy strictly enforced!   <= /p>

 

2. Classroom Behavior: See attached discipline plan. <= /p>

 

3. Tests, quizzes, essays, assignments, and projects w= ill be allotted an appropriate number of points based on the difficulty of the wor= k. You must complete all assignments in = order to succeed in this class.

 

4. You are expected to complete all assignments on tim= e. Late or incomplete assignments will only be accepted for half credit. It is= in your best interest to complete all assignments on the day that they are due= . If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up missed assignments or = to get missed notes. Please see me after class for missing assignments. Rem= inder: Just because you were absent the day before an exam or quiz does not mean t= hat you will not take it when you return on the exam date!

 

5. If you plan on cheating in this course, you will re= ceive a zero. This policy holds true for plagiarism on written assignments and projects.

 

Grading Scale:

100-93  &nbs= p;          A

92-86   = ;            = B

85-78   = ;            = C

77-70   = ;            = D

69-0   =             &nb= sp; F
