Advanced Placeme= nt European History “…is intended to offer motivated students an opportunity to experience historical development in greater depth than poss= ible at any other high school level.” One of the main goals of AP European History is to prepare students for success on the AP European History Examination. Over ninety-percent of colleges give AP credit and/or advanced placement to students with acceptable examination scores. Given the current costs of university education, as well as the increasing difficulty in completing an undergraduate degree in four years, Advanced Placement course= s in all subjects are invaluable.

Although the AP examination is the natural goal of the course, it is not computed in= to final grade. The test will be administered in May through the College Board. Students are required to pay a fee of approximately $82 in March. Details regarding the test will follow second semester.

The examination is divided into three sections. The first section consists of 80 multiple-choice questions. Some of these are knowledge based; others require interpretation, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. The multiple-choice se= ction is extremely difficult. Consequently, it is critical that students complete= all reading assignments and spend several weeks preparing and reviewing for the exam. There are several review books that can be purchased from any booksto= re. The Princeton Review of AP European History and Barron’s AP European History are both good sources.

The remaining two sections require written responses. Students can choose among several thematic questions for one essay, while the other consists of a Document Based Question (DBQ). The DBQ provides the student with 10-12 documents that have to be analyzed. For the AP European Examination, no previous knowledge is necessary for the DBQ. Since most of the test is an e= ssay format, we devote a great deal of class time to writing historical essays a= nd DBQ’s.

In addition to preparation for the AP Examination, this course will provide a sound overview of Western Civilization from the Renaissance to the present.= AP European History is different from A-level World History in that most of the readings are college-level, including the textbook. It is a challenging cla= ss that is designed to be demanding at times. Much of the work will need to be done at home, as it is impossible to cover all of the material in class. Pl= ease encourage your child to rise to high standards set by the College Board and myself. The end result will be a beneficial and rewarding educational experience.
