Second Semester

Advanced Placement Literature Composition Contract for Enrollment

Please read the following information about AP Literature and Composition. It is a summation from an AP Collegeboard publication and gives a fair representation about this course.

An AP course in English Literature and Composition engages students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Through the close reading of selected texts, students deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers. As they read, students consider a work’s structure, style, and themes as well as such smaller-scale elements as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism and tone.  The course includes intensive study of representative works from various genres and periods, concentrating on works of recognized literary merit. The pieces chosen invite and reward rereading and do not, like ephemeral works in such popular genres as detective or romance fiction, yield all (or nearly all) of their pleasure of thought and feeling the first time through. . . .

Students enrolled in this course will be expected to:

·         Have a fairly heavy reading and writing load during the academic school year. (Yes, maybe even have books assigned to read over holiday breaks.)

·         Participate in an online component to the course through RCampus

·         Purchase (if possible) books that the class is using.

·         Take the AP test in the spring.

I would recommend each student enrolled in the course:

·         Be proficient in all Language and Writing Standards

·         Have grades that are admirable

·         Know how to manage a heavy work load

I believe that those students who would like to challenge themselves by taking the AP Literature and Composition class should. However, it could be a miserable semester if that student found him or herself in a class for which he or she was ill suited.

General informational note

The contract is due January 10th.  It should be returned as an attachment to Mrs. Sheehan.
