Persuasive or Argumentative Essay

 

Helpful Hints

(in no particular order)

 

  1. No title needed
  2. Four paragraphs works best, three works well (Five paragraphs = NO) (You do not have time.)
  3. No preview or restating is required
  4. DO NOT say “I think…”
  5. Use sophisticated, mature language
  6. Pay attention to “voice” (refer to handout)
  7. Remind the reader in your conclusion of your position.
  8. It is OK to cross things out, use arrows to add things, and generally edit your work.  Aim for at least three edits on your paper. 

 

 

What do you need to do to be successful?

 

1.  Read the prompt carefully.

ü      Use the numbering trick.

ü      Stick with your position.

ü      Stick with your context.

 

2.  Introduction

ü      Introduce your position.

ü      Infer your context.

3.  Arguments

ü      Address a counter argument

                                      and/or 

ü      Discuss implications and complications.

ü      Explore a different perspective.

4.  Conclusion

ü      Restate position statement in different words

5.  Transitions are needed

ü      Do not use juvenile transitions.

ü      Refer to the transition sheet prior to the test and have a few memorized for use.
